The world of Pokemon Trading Card Game (TCG) is ablaze with excitement as trainers and collectors alike prepare to dive into the latest expansion: Obsidian Flames. Now in my opinion, this set does not come with a great amount of game changing mechanics. Hard to believe this set is relatively small, despite totalling 230 cards for the full set. Within this set, there comes only 12 unique trainer cards, 2 of which, are reprints from within the Scarlet and Violet series. So, all up, only 10 new trainer cards, which is a bit disappointing as the more trainers, the more interesting and complex playing can get.
There is however, a bunch of new Pokemon to shake up the game. One in particular which stands out among the rest is definitely the Pidgeot ex line.
The new ability “Quick Search” is essentially a Forrest Seal Stone every single turn. It can allow for significantly severe implications for your opponents and the safety of their field. What was a once a game ability, is now a one a turn terrifying implication. Not only that, it comes with zero retreat cost!
In addition to this new ability, I cannot go past the arts in this set. Some are absolutely stunning! Just a few of my favourites below:
No doubt I will be making this Scizor deck as well! Up to 310 damage per turn for a single energy… can’t pass this up!
Now, onto the stat tracking!
We opened a full case of Obsidian Flames to see how we faired collecting all the goodies. It was probably the most successful full case we have ever opened, in terms of collecting the set!
226/230 cards collected.
That’s right! 98% of the whole set being complete, missing only 4 individual cards. Not a bad effort for this case.

Worth noting that unlike previous series, Scarlet and Violet booster boxes will always end up with exactly 108 hits as reverse holo or greater. This is because this series have at least 2 reverse holos and 1 holos per pack (minimum), where in the past there was only a guarantee of a reverse holo per pack. It also means that regular rare cards will now be a thing of the past, only having holo or reverse holo rares going forward.

One last quick tip! both our gold Charizard ex and Full Art Charizard ex both came from the first pack on the front right side. Could be a coincidence, but you never know XD
